Buchpreis für das Buch Flexible Authoritarianism von Anna Schwenck

Flexible Authoritarianism challenges the notion that authoritarianism's transnational rise constitutes a backlash against economic globalization. Describing a governmental approach that simultaneously incentivizes a can-do spirit and suppresses dissent, the book points out resonances between authoritarian and neoliberal ideologies in today's comeback of strongman rule. Drawing on field observations, in-depth interviews, and analyses of video clips, it conveys the look and feel of flexible authoritarianism in Russia through the eyes of up-and-coming youth. The author analyzes ways in which the insignia of cool start-up capitalism and familiar cultural forms such as the summer camp help stabilize the regime, while also showing how up-and-coming youth both embrace and contest loyalty to the government.
*Anna Schwenck*'s research lies at the intersection of cultural and political sociology. She is particularly interested in how cultural understandings, be they transnational or locally specific, shape political behaviour. She studied the resonances between authoritarianism and neoliberalism in Russia, pandemic and science skepticism in German-speaking countries, and processes of re-traditionalization in popular music cultures. Her recent work investigates the role of liberation songs and narratives in conventional and contentious politics in South Africa.
Anna Schwenck is employed at the University of Siegen's department of social sciences and the Siegen-based collaborative research centre "Transformations of the Popular" (SFB 1472). She is also a visiting researcher at the University of the Western Cape's Anthropology Department in South Africa. She earned a PhD in Sociology and an MA in Social Sciences from Humboldt University Berlin, as well as a BA in Cultural Studies from Viadrina European University, Frankfurt (Oder). She was a visiting student/scholar at University College London's School of Slavonic and East European Studies, the Sociology Department at the University of California (Berkeley), and the Russian State University for the Humanities (Moscow).

Zum Ende des Sommersemesters 2024 laden das Zentrum für Osteuropa- und internationale Studien (ZOiS) und das Center for Comparative Research on Democracy (CCRD) am Lehrbereich für Vergleichende Demokratieforschung und Politische Systeme Osteuropas der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin zu einem multidisziplinären Forschungskolloquium ein. Das Kolloquium findet in Kooperation mit der Freien Universität Berlin und der Europa-Universität Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) statt und versteht sich als Diskussionsforum für work-in-progress von Promovierenden, Postdocs und etablierten Wissenschaftler*innen, deren sozialwissenschaftliche Arbeit einen Osteuropabezug hat. Das Ziel ist es, mit diesem Kolloquium im Raum Berlin-Brandenburg einen beständigen Treffpunkt in der Osteuropaforschung zu etablieren. Das Forschungskolloquium findet in diesem Jahr erstmalig als halbtägiger Workshop an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin statt.

Annual Interdisciplinary Conference of the Institute for Global Reconstitution
The world is living through an important moment where a multiple crisis – a "polycrisis" – is taking the form of plural and simultaneous global threats: the rise of aggressive militaristic states and right-wing populist parties, the catastrophic consequences of climate change, and an increasing vulnerability to fatal pandemics. This conference aims to examine the potential of new beginnings arising from the polycrisis. The discussion will take place at the intersection of political theory, the philosophy of nature, and policy analysis. It will focus on the concept of formative powers, particularly in two main areas: political constitutionalism and nature politics.
In the political constitutionalism theme, the conference will explore the topics of constituent power, the challenges to traditional approaches to constitutionalism and constitutions, and the visions for the constitution of democratic polities in new circumstances and beyond the stereotypical liberal-democratic models. These new visions will have to address the crisis in its global and domestic implications. In the nature politics theme, the conference will address the nexus between nature and technology, alternatives to extractivism, and environmental ontologies, while also reflecting on the perspectives of global climate governance in the current polycrisis.
The conference is organized in partnership with the Center for Comparative Research on Democracy (CCRD) at Humboldt University of Berlin and Bard College Berlin.

Graphic medicine is a subgenre of comics that combines comic studies, medical humanities, disability, and trauma studies. It primarily focuses on illness, trauma, and disability, often through graphic memoirs written by individuals with personal experiences of these conditions. In this talk, Prof. Layne explores how graphic medicine challenges philosopher Walter Benjamin's distinction between Erfahrung (observed experience) and Erlebnis (lived experience). Graphic medicine conveys lived experiences (Erlebnis) and uses a blend of images and text to represent illness and trauma in ways that traditional language cannot. This challenges ideas about stable identities, advocating for a more inclusive, less ableist understanding of human experience.

Der Diskurs über Recht und Politische Ökonomie hat in der US-amerikanischen Rechtswissenschaft große Aufmerksamkeit erlangt. Aufbauend auf der Konferenz „Law and Political Economy in Germany“, die im Juni in Berlin stattfand, widmet sich dieses Blog-Symposium dem Dialog zwischen dem Diskurs von Recht und Politischer Ökonomie und dem deutschen Rechtsdenken.
