Transnationalization of Social Relations

This research project aims at providing information about the transnationalization of social relations at the individual level. It departs from the perspective of transnationalization research that focuses on migration issues by looking at the involvement of the whole population in border-crossing interaction. On the basis of a representative survey (carried out by the research institute IPSOS in 2006, CATI-design) the project will give detailed information on the quality, density and frequency of the transnational contacts of the German population. Furthermore, the design of the study allows ascertaining in which way transnational interactions are shaped by institutional contexts and which spheres of everyday life are affected by processes of transnationalization. Thus, the study allows determining whether the macro-phenomena of transnationalization are accompanied by micro-processes of transnationalization.
