Humboldt University of Berlin, Senate Hall in the Main Building, Unter den Linden 6, 10117 Berlin

In recent years, survivors and activists have increasingly raised their voice to reveal and end gender-based violence through campaigns and activism on the streets and in social media. The women's movement in Turkey is only one example amongst many. The reactions to the rape and killings of the students Özgecan Aslan and Şule Çet have shown that the struggle against gender-based violence is not just a brief 'outcry' but a political statement. Gender-based violence is a global issue but the ways of how different societies and states deal with and react to it are varied.

In this panel, the speakers will talk about violence against women in Turkey by focusing on the media coverage of gender issues and the reproduction of sexist discourse, masculinity and feminicide, and multiple forms of marginalization of women. The panel also brings into discussion forms of resistance, solidarity movements, and activism against gender-based violence.

The panel will be conducted in German and Turkish with simultaneous translation. There will be a reception afterwards
