Lecture "Europäische Standards für Demokratie und Rechtsstaatlichkeit – Harter Kern und weiches Recht"

On Tuesday, the 2nd of July, the Integrated Research Institute "Law & Society" invites for a guest lecture held by Prof. Dr. Christoph Grabenwarter on the topic "Europäische Standards für Demokratie und Rechtsstaatlichkeit - Harter Kern und weiches Recht". The lecture will be in German.

It will take place at the Faculty of Law (Unter den Linden 9) in room E25 and will start at 7 pm.

On the lecture: Current crises of democracy and the rule of law in some European countries raise the question of European standards. For procedures under Article 7 TEU for violation of fundamental principles, as they are currently pending against Poland and Hungary, reference is made to the values of Article 2 TEU. Among these, democracy and the rule of law are prominently featured.

The lecturer regards these as European "constitutional principles" and addresses the question of how far these are legally binding in core areas. In addition, the lecturer examines the significance of "soft law" for the determination and further development of these principles and the role played by the "European Commission for Democracy through Law", the so-called Venice Commission.

The speaker: Prof. Dr. Christoph Grabenwarter is Vice President of the Austrian Constitutional Court, Professor of Public Law, International Law and Economic Law at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and member of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. He is currently a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.
