Abstract:

As an NGO which works in partnership with tribal peoples and lobbies and campaigns for their rights, Survival International is engaged with scientific knowledge from a wide variety of disciplines, from anthropology to agronomy to environmental science. Scientific representations may support the organisation’s aims, but are equally sometimes actively harmful to the interests of indigenous peoples around the world. Scientific knowledge is also confronted by indigenous peoples’ knowledge about themselves and their environments. In this lecture and the following discussion (in English), Sakina Elkhazein will discuss Survival International’s work with a focus on dealing with scientific and indigenous knowledge in a campaigning organisation.
