Title

Who is considered responsible for financial security in old age?

Abstract

The German welfare state has undergone profound changes in the last couple of decades. Reforms in the system that provides financial security in old age now tend to encourage more individual responsibility than it was previously the case. However, it is still unknown whether the attitudes of the people living in Germany chime with the direction of these reforms. Has there been an increasing consensus on the role of individual responsibility in financial security in old age? Within my project I want to analyze the following questions: attitudes relating to public and private responsibilities and ideologies of social justice, changes in attitudes over time, regional differences, and the effect of the transition into retirement on such attitudes. The data used in this dissertation project come from several waves of the German Ageing Survey (DEAS).
