Joint Seminar I: Turkey and Germany - A comparative Approach to the Study of Modernisation

In order to understand the social, political, cultural and economic problems and challenges that Germany and Turkey are facing today, knowledge on their historical contexts is needed. This course aims to approach these issues from a comparative perspective and highlights differences and similarities. Particular attention is paid to a critical reading of modernisation theory as it helps to explain the various transformations in each country as well as their respective regional relations and linkages. This course provides students with the opportunity to engage in own research activities.

Modern Turkey: Political Transformations and Governance Structures

This course aims to introduce students to the political transformations that modern Turkey has been undergoing since its foundation. Students study both the historical context and a critical review of contemporary developments. The continuities and discontinuities of the transformation process will be discussed in an attempt to provide students with the toolkit to understand domestic developments as a foundation of Turkey's position in the wider neighbourhood.

Seminar: Social Science Readings in German I

This course introduces students to classical and contemporary social science texts in German. Through a critical reading and discussion of the texts, the students develop intermediate reading and writing skills in the German language in the area of social sciences.

Seminar: Social Science Readings in Turkish I

This course introduces students to classical and contemporary social science texts in Turkish. Through a critical reading and discussion of the texts, the students develop advanced reading and writing skills in Turkish language in the area of social sciences.

Colloquium: Graduate Seminar I

Lehrende: Ayşe İdil Aybars

This course teaches students how to conduct research in the social sciences. Students will be exposed to different theoretical and methodical applications in order to enable them to engage in comparative and interdisciplinary projects.

Summer Semester

Joint Seminar II: Turkey and Germany - Globalisation and Political Economy

Lehrende: Helga Rittersberger-Tılıç; Gökhan Tuncer

Turkey and Germany, just as it is the case with other societies globally, are confronted with similar social and economic changes causess by the expansion and decline of welfare states, of globalisation, changing identities and their political implications. This course approaches these problems and challenges from a comparative perspective and engages in a sound theoretical reflection. Particular attention are paid to transnational linkages within the European context. Again, the students engage in own research projects, alone or in teams.

Seminar: Turkey as a Regional Player

Lehrende: Ayça Ergun; Özlem Tür

Turkey's foreign policy and its role in the geopolitical context is in the centre of this course, with a particular focus on the Middle East and Eurasia. Students look into various approaches to study international relations. A special emphasis lies on issues of security, energy, water, democratization and regional cooperation.
