We are excited to announce our upcoming book talk on June 25th, in collaboration with BIM. Asli Zengin, who was part of our 2020 lecture series "Anatomy of a Political Regime", will be discussing her new book, "Violent Intimacies: The Trans Everyday and the Making of an Urban World".
Zengin's research lies at the intersection of the ethnography of trans, queer, sex worker, and sex/gender transgressive lives; scientific and legal regimes of sex, gender, and sexuality; critical studies of violence and sovereignty; death, funerals, cemeteries, and afterlives; as well as the transnational aspects of LGBTQ and feminist movements in the Middle East, with a special focus on Turkey.
Her second book, "Violent Intimacies: The Trans Everyday and the (Un)Making of an Urban World", was released in 2024 by Duke University Press. It examines how everyday troubles with sex/gender nonconformity in social and institutional life shape the organization of state power, the social production of family and kinship, the religious order, and the trans lives, deaths, and activism in Turkey.
