Health Insurance

Students must provide a proof of health insurance to enroll at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin as every person in Germany needs to be insured by law. Therefore you have to obtain either (a) a proof of health insurance with a German statutory health insurance provider (Bescheinigung der Krankenversicherung), or of you have a private insurance already (b) a dispensation form from a German statutory health insurance provider to confirm that you are privately insured (Befreiung von der Krankenversicherungspflicht).

Most health insurances also issue documents via email and/or scan.

(a) Bescheinigung der Krankenversicherung

If you are insured at a German statutory health insurance company, ask for a Bescheinigung der Krankenversicherung zur Vorlage bei Hochschulen (proof of health insurance for an enrolment at the university). A copy of the chipcard does not suffice.

If you are an EU-resident (or a resident of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Norway, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Turkey, Tunisia) and you are insured in your home country you may go to the office of any German health insurance company and receive a Bescheinigung der Krankenversicherung upon providing your Auslandskrankenschein (EHIC).

In case you have not received your campus card/student ID yet, please hand in your Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin acceptance letter to the health insurance company as proof of your student status.

(b) Befreiung von der Krankenversicherungspflicht

German and international students, who are privately insured, must obtain a Befreiung der Krankenversicherungspflicht (dipensation from health insurance). The Befreiung von der Krankenversicherungspflicht is issued by most branches of any statutory German health insurance company. A private certification does not suffice.

Before doing this, make sure your private insurance is valid in Germany and that a proof of exemption/dispensation is the best option for you. In this case, you won't be able to change to the public German insurance for the duration of your study program in Germany.

In case you have not received your campus card/student ID yet, please hand in your Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin acceptance letter to the health insurance company as proof of your student status.

Please note: If you are an international student and above the age of 30, you do not qualify for German student statutory insurance, and must take the private route.
