Research Fellow

Luke Shuttleworth’s research focuses on the normalisation of far right politics in Europe, as well as how far right actors mobilise in liberal democracies. In his dissertation, he examines how mainstream parties’ use of exclusionary populist ideas and discourses creates political opportunities for far right actors to mobilise and gain legitimacy in society. Specifically, he is interested in understanding how mainstream parties contribute to the normalisation of far right discourses. As a lecturer, he teaches seminars on far right politics, social exclusion, and political inequality at the Department of Social Sciences.

Prior to taking up his position at Humboldt-Universität, Luke worked as a Research Associate at the Institute of Advanced Sustainability Studies in Potsdam from 2018 to 2020. He holds degrees in European Studies (B.Sc.), International Development (M.Sc.), and completed the Research Training Program in Social Sciences (M.A.) at Humboldt-Universität in 2020. In 2021, he visited the ECPR Methods School and completed a course on Critical Discourse Analysis and the Discourse Historical Approach.
