Launch Event "Judiciary and Democracy – Unravelling Present Challenges, Activating Future Potentials” (JuDem)
On November 17, 2025, the launch event for the project “Judiciary and Democracy – Unravelling Present Challenges, Activating Future Potentials” (JuDem) took place in the Festsaal of Humboldt University in Berlin. The event was organized by the CCRD in collaboration with the Integrative Research Institute Law & Society and the American Academy in Berlin. The event attracted a large number of participants, including scholars, lawyers, and members of the academic community. After a welcome speech by the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural, Social, and Educational Sciences, Prof. Dr. Claudia Becker, the research team introduced themselves and presented the central research questions and methodological approaches of the project. The keynote speaker for the evening, Prof. Oona A. Hathaway from Yale Law School, then gave her lecture entitled “The Past, Present, and the Future of the Global Legal Order,” in which she traced the historical origins of international law and the global legal order in order to provide a better understanding of the present. The lecture was followed by a lively discussion with questions and comments from the audience.
