Border Materiality and Infrastructure

The research project analyses state borders in Asia and Europe, considering them as part of a global border infrastructure. Three different types of border materiality and infrastructure are studied that are significant for the selected borders: border control, economy, and water infrastructure. The overarching goal is to achieve a better understanding of borders worldwide by incorporating the specifics of local processes (such as violence, war and exceptional closures) as well as the consistency and power of the global state order. The project is based on a comparative and global ethnography with a focus on urban border spaces. It is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
