The conflict in Yemen has precipitated what many consider to be the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. However, despite unprecedented displacement within Yemen, the numbers of Yemenis who have left the country to seek refugee status abroad are relatively low. Today, roughly 1,000 of these Yemeni refugees reside in Djibouti’s Markazi camp, where they interact on a daily basis with Ethiopian migrants walking towards Yemen. This talk provides an overview of the current situation of Yemeni refugees in the Horn of Africa, analyzing a complex set of displacements in a geopolitically-sensitive region where “refugees” racialized as Arab are effectively held captive while “migrants” racialized as African are effectively abandoned. This case study illuminates how intersecting global and regional im/mobilities and inequalities are experienced and navigated by "refugees" and "migrants" on the move.

Nathalie Peutz is a cultural anthropologist who has conducted wide-ranging, ethnographic research in Yemen, Djibouti, and Somaliland. At NYUAD, she has served as the Program Head for Arab Crossroads Studies. She is an associated faculty member in the Department of Anthropology at NYU New York.
