Johanna Yr Bjarnadottir joined the research training group "The Dynamics of Demography, Democratic Processes and Public Policy" (DYNAMICS), jointly organized by the Hertie School of Governance and the Department of Social Sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, as a PhD candidate in September 2020. Her doctoral thesis is supervised by Thomas Meyer.

She attained her bachelor's and master's degrees in Social Sciences at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Additionally, she spent a year at Sciences Po, the Mediterranean campus in Menton. During her studies, Johanna worked at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) in the department of democracy and democratization. 

Johanna's research interests involve political parties, democratic responsiveness and political participation. Her key focus is the analysis of political parties' responsiveness to political protests and social movements in Europe, and which factors affect this responsiveness.
